Osiyo! ᎣᏏᏲ! Hello! This website is a collection of educational resources accumulated by a small group of students learning the Cherokee language.  These are already publicly available elsewhere on the Internet and are simply consolidated here for our own use and in case others who want to learn Cherokee find them helpful to have in one spot as well.

We include resources that have been produced in affiliation with or by the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Museum of the Cherokee in South Carolina, first-language speakers, scholars, and advanced learners. The quality and accuracy of Cherokee language materials varies and we try to only include resources that have been created or reviewed by first-language Cherokee speakers.

We include resources for both the Western/Overhill dialect (used by the Cherokee Nation) and the Eastern/Kituwah dialect (used by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians). While some words and pronunciations differ, both dialects also share a lot of similarities.

Are you brand new to learning Cherokee and don’t know where to start? The book Journeying into Cherokee: Help and Encouragement for Learning the Cherokee Language by Ed Fields and Mary Rae is an excellent place to start. A talk by Sarah Oosahwee-Voss at the Cherokee National Holiday and other talks also offer encouragement for those beginning their language learning journey.
