Free Online Classes

Cherokee Nation classes; 10-week online classes offered three times a year spring-fall, taught by Ed Fields, a Cherokee Nation first-language speaker. Recordings of past classes are available on YouTube for Ed’s Cherokee 1 class, Cherokee 2 class, and Cherokee 3 class.

RSU Public TV Cherokee Language classes. Recorded 50-minute video lessons by Wade Blevins, a Cherokee Nation second-language speaker who often invites Cherokee Nation first-language speakers to speak in the classes.

Cherokee Language 101/Jalagi Gawoni covers the book Cherokee Language Lessons by Michael Joyner and includes quizzes to complete over book material. PDFs of book chapters are provided for free.

Cherokee Textbook by Myrtle Driver Johnson is available online through the Kituwah Preservation and Education Program. It includes audio files.

In-Person Non-University Classes

Ed Fields offers two free week-long in-person classes in the summer in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The dates for these are mentioned during the online class (see above for information on joining his online class).

Cherokee Nation offers in-person classes throughout the nation’s 14-county area in northeastern Oklahoma. Often these will be mentioned on the Cherokee Nation Facebook page.

University Classes

Northeastern State University offers a Cherokee Education B.A. E.D. degree

The University of Oklahoma offerrs Cherokee language classes as part of their Native American Language Program.

Joleen Scott at Bacone College sometimes teaches Cherokee online

Western Carolina University offers Cherokee language courses

Yale University will be offering a Cherokee language class for credit for the first time in the fall of 2023

Cherokee Language Master Apprentice Program

The Cherokee Language Master Apprentice Program creates Cherokee language teachers by pairing adults with master-level fluent speakers. It is a two-year program in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
